Summary
The module develops the skills required to design, plan, implement and manage a research project. Students will be given instruction and practice in: problem definition; collection and synthesis of information from a range of traditional and electronic sources; critical review of information; definition of scope, aims and objectives; development of a project plan and schedule; management of project progress; reporting and presentation of outcomes. Particular emphasis of the module is towards quality control and quality assurance and how these underpin measurement activities. The use of statistics for the assessment of data quality in measurement is also emphasised. Students will also develop their writing and practical skills through exercises and coursework.
Target Students
Available to students registered for MSc or Postgraduate Diploma in the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
Classes
- One 2-hour practicum each week for 12 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
The module will comprise a series of lectures, tutorials and practicals. Students will undertake, under supervision, develop an appreciation and an ability plan and evaluate the requirements for a research project. Directed study to include the preparation of a research plan, individual presentation and a laboratory report.
Assessment
- 70% Coursework 1: 3,000 word individual report and presentation
- 30% Coursework 2: 1,000 word laboratory group report
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module aims primarily to provide students with the necessary pre-requisite skills required for the study of modules that require a foundation knowledge of measurement. To provide students with a working knowledge of basic measurement principles and practice. This module will embed the skills students to require to develop their personal research and engineering skills and apply them to the design and development of a research project.Learning Outcomes
A2 Chemical Engineering Principles:
- A2.2.6 Be able to apply the same underlying principles to more complex problems, critically evaluating the limitations of assumptions of the approach taken
- A2.6.8 Have some understanding of the limits of available technology and of the potential of new and emerging technologies
A3 Chemical Engineering Practice:
- A3.2.12 Understand the limitations of current practice
- A3.2.15 Have undertaken research and/or development project work that provides opportunities for: application of research methods, including structured design of experimental work; originality and experience in dealing with uncertainty and new concepts and/or applications
- A3.2.16 Have communicated the outcomes of the project work in a professional manner that may include thesis; publication; poster; presentation.
