Summary
The module will explore decision making in the presence of uncertainty Risks of particular interest are those associated with large engineering projects such as the development of innovative new products and processes. The module will presents and interpret some of the frameworks helpful for balancing risks and benefits in situations that typically involve human safety, potential environmental effects, and large financial and technological uncertainties. Case studies will be used to illustrate key points and these will centre around the use and recovery of plastics, metals, industrial minerals and energy.
Target Students
Students registered in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering only.
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: Market survey and risk analysis
- 60% Coursework 2: Business plan with a dragons den presentation
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module will enable students to develop skills in decision making in the presence of uncertainty. It will also be used to further develop their ability to critically appraise technologies and present information using a variety of techniques.Learning Outcomes
A2 Chemical Engineering Principles:
A2.5.6 understand how to combine and adapt different aspects of systems thinking to complex and novel processes.
Assessed though the business plan coursework where techno-economic analysis is used to consider the competing technical and commercial drivers in a complex process.
A2.6.7 be able to apply the same principles with systems thinking to more complex problems
Assessed through the risk study in coursework 1 where commercial and technical risks are considered.
A2.6.8 have some understanding of the limits of available technology and of the potential of new and emerging technology
The technologies considered in this module are all new and emerging technologies so the risk study and all other aspects are applied to new and emerging technology.
A2.7.6 Be able to apply principles of sustainability, economics and ethics to novel and complex situations with conflicting requirements
Assessed through the business plan coursework and underpinning techno-economic evaluation.
A3 Chemical Engineering Practice:
A3.2.13 have a broad knowledge and critical awareness of developments at the forefront of chemical engineering
The technologies considered in this module are all new and emerging technologies
A5 Embedded Learning:
A5.2.10 Have the ability to handle uncertainty and complexity
The technologies considered are all new emerging step change technologies which are complex and uncertain to consider throughout this module.
A5.2.12 Have the ability to develop innovative approaches, addressing combinations of societal, business, and customer needs, while considering diversity, inclusion, cultural, societal, environmental and commercials matters, codes of practice, and industry standards
The technologies considered are all new emerging step change technologies which are complex and uncertain to consider throughout this module. There are a combination of often competing aspects and priorities to consider throughout.
