Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

1. Enhance Visual Communication SkillsAim to equip students with the ability to effectively communicate architectural ideas and concepts through various drawing techniques including line, tone, texture, and shading.2. Develop Technical ProficiencyFocus on developing students’ technical skills in using different tools such as pens for mark-making, understanding the nuances of composition, and applying colour theory in architectural drawings.3. Foster Understanding of Architectural PrinciplesAim to deepen students’ understanding of key architectural principles through the study and application of composition, perspective drawing, and the use of colour in architectural representation.4. Promote Practical ApplicationEncourage students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, particularly through the creation of drawings and 3D models using physical materials, bridging the gap between conceptualization and real-world application.5. Cultivate Critical Thinking and CreativityAim to stimulate critical thinking and creativity in students, enabling them to explore innovative ways of representing architectural concepts and designs.6. Support English Language DevelopmentProvide an environment conducive to improving English language proficiency, particularly in architectural terminology, enabling non-native speakers to effectively communicate and articulate their ideas in an academic setting.

Learning Outcomes

Line and Tone Drawing: Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in creating line and tone drawings, understanding the importance of line weight, tone variation, and their application in architectural representation. This includes effectively communicating spatial depth and material texture through these techniques.

Texture and Mark Making with Pen: Students will develop skills in rendering textures and shading using various pens, understanding how different mark-making techniques can depict various materials and textures in architectural drawings.

Composition: Students will learn to effectively arrange architectural elements within a drawing to create balanced and visually compelling compositions. Emphasis will be on understanding the principles of visual hierarchy, alignment, and proportion in architectural representation.

Colour Theory: Students will gain knowledge of colour theory and its application in architectural drawings. They will learn how to use colour to enhance spatial understanding, indicate materials, and convey mood or atmosphere in their work.

1 Point, 2 Point, and 3 Point Perspective Drawing: Students will master the techniques of 1 point, 2 point and 3 point perspective drawing, enabling them to accurately represent three-dimensional spaces and structures on a two-dimensional plane. This includes understanding horizon lines, vanishing points, and spatial depth.

3D Modelling with Physical Materials: Students will develop hands-on skills in creating three-dimensional architectural models using physical materials. This includes developing an understanding of scale, material properties, and the translation of 2D drawings into 3D forms and vice versa.
