Summary
This module is designed to prepare international students for academic study in the field of Engineering in a UK Higher Education context. It develops students' understanding of the academic discourse and literary requirements of such study. The development of reading, writing, listening and speaking competencies are integrated in a sequence of discipline-relevant tasks which include a focus on academic texts, taking students towards an upper intermediate/advanced level of academic language use.
Target Students
Only available for students registered on a presessional English Language programme (CELE preparatory English Language).
Classes
20 contact hours per week in main teaching weeks plus self-study.
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Assessment of writing and reading skills, 1,500-2,500 word written assignment.
- 50% Coursework 2: Assessment of speaking and listening skills; participation in group presentation of approximately 15 minutes per student.

This module aims to develop students' academic discourse and literacy in preparation for entry to the Department of Engineering at the University of Nottingham.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the course, students will have gained:
A1) an improved understanding of academic communities;
A2) an understanding of how discipline-related ontology/epistemology are reflected in different uses of genre and language;
A3) experience of researching and analysing data and expressing understanding, position and evaluation of this in writing and speech;
A4) an understanding of the expectations of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshop contexts and improved confidence when participate.

On successful completion of the course students will have gained:

B2) the ability to employ critical analysis and sound reasoning to issues related to their academic discipline.
