Summary
This module is a summer-only 6-week version of the 10 week Presessional English for Academic Purposes module level 4 designed to prepare international students for study in a UK Higher Education context. It develops students understanding of the academic discourse and literacy requirements of study in a UK HE institution. The development of reading, writing, listening and speaking competencies are integrated in a sequence of research-based tasks which include a focus on academic texts, taking students to an upper intermediate/advanced level of language.
Target Students
Only available for students registered on a presessional English Language programme (CELE preparatory English Language).
Classes
20 contact hours per week in main teaching weeks plus self study
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: 1500 - 2500 words
- 50% Oral: approx 20 minutes

Educational Aims
This module aims to develop students’ academic discourse and literacy in preparation for their progression to academic study. Students will improve their ability to work autonomously and critically as well as their ability to control the English needed for academic study.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module, students will have gained:
• an improved understanding of academic communities;
• an understanding of a controversial issue within a specific discipline and how opposing or differing views of that issue within the field are expressed;
• experience of researching, examining a controversial issue in a discipline and expressing their own understanding and position and in speech and writing.
Intellectual Skills
On successful completion of the module, students will have gained:
- an ability to analyse spoken and written academic discourse;
- the ability to employ analysis and sound reasoning to issues related to their own discipline.
