Summary

This module is 6-week version of the 10 week module designed to prepare international students for postgraduate study in the field of Business and Management in a UK Higher Education context. It develops students’ understanding of the academic discourse and literacy requirements of such study. The development of reading, writing, listening and speaking competencies are integrated in a sequence of discipline-relevant tasks which include a focus on academic texts, taking students to an upper intermediate/advanced level of language.

Educational Aims

This module aims to develop students’ academic discourse and literacy in preparation for entry to postgraduate degree programmes in the Business School at the University of Nottingham. Students will improve their ability to work autonomously and critically as well as their ability to control the English needed for academic study.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding. On successful completion of the course, students will have gained:

· an improved understanding of academic communities;

· an understanding of a controversial issue within a specific discipline and how opposing or differing views of that issue within the field are expressed;

· experience of researching, examining a controversial issue in a discipline and expressing their own understanding and position in speech and writing;

· experience of managing writing under timed exam conditions.

Intellectual Skills On successful completion of the course, students will have gained:

· an ability to analyse spoken and written academic discourse;

· the ability to employ analysis and sound reasoning to issues related to their own discipline.

Transferable Skills On successful completion of the course, students will have gained:

· improved control of a range of discourse features;

· improved control of a range of academic vocabulary and structures;

· improved competency in reading, writing, listening and speaking for academic purposes;

· improved ability to undertake both independent and collaborative activities effectively;

· improved ability to use a critical and reflexive approach.
