Educational Aims

The aim of the module is to provide students with a receptive and productive mastery in general contexts of the lexis, structure and functions of English.Lexical, structural, functional and textual aspects of English will be considered from an applied linguistics viewpoint and enable students to reflect in a principled way on applied concerns such as the translation and interpretation of English. The module will also explore sources of information and guidance to aid in the solution of difficulties related to these applied concerns.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding of:
•  the lexis, structure and functions of English appropriate to a range of general contexts;
•  situational constraints, pragmatics and registers of English in the above contexts;
•  textual aspects of English in the above contexts;
•  cultural background relevant to the understanding of the above contexts;
•  the effect of context, linguistic form and meaning on choice of translation techniques.
 

Intellectual skills
•  ability to assess appropriacy of lexical, structural and functional solutions to linguistic problems;
•  ability to infer and construct intentional, situational and cultural context from textual input.

Professional practical skills
•  ability to comprehend and create linguistic content appropriate to a range of text types, fields and situations;
•  a mastery of productive and receptive skills at the relevant level;
•  an acquaintance with resources relevant to the solution of professional and practical problems.
