Educational Aims

Physical Education plays a key role for your development in terms of skill development, improving your physical and mental health, and increasing your capacity to learn, retain new information and perform better at your studies.

Learning Outcomes

1.    Improved Physical Fitness: PE courses typically include regular physical activity, which can help students improve their overall physical fitness. This includes cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and endurance. Regular exercise can lead to better health outcomes, including reduced risk of chronic diseases.
2.    Stress Reduction: Engaging in physical activity can help reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Many university students experience high levels of stress due to academic demands, and PE courses provide an outlet for stress relief through exercise.
3.    Healthy Lifestyle Habits: PE courses often educate students about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition and fitness. This education can lead to long-term healthy habits that extend beyond the classroom.
4.    Social Interaction: PE courses can foster social interaction and teamwork, as many activities are done in groups or teams. This can help students develop social skills, build friendships, and create a sense of community on campus.
5.    Time Management: Participating in PE courses requires students to manage their time effectively, as they need to balance physical activity with their academic commitments. Learning to manage time is a valuable life skill.
6.    Academic Performance: Some studies suggest a positive correlation between physical activity and academic performance. Engaging in regular exercise can improve cognitive function, memory, and concentration, which can benefit students in their other coursework.
7.    Healthy Lifestyle Choices: PE courses may expose students to a variety of physical activities and sports, encouraging them to explore new interests and hobbies. This can lead to a lifelong commitment to staying active and trying new things.
8.    Mental Health Benefits: Physical activity has been linked to improved mental health outcomes, including reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. PE courses can serve as a mental health resource for students.
9.    Self-Discipline and Goal Setting: PE courses often require students to set and achieve fitness goals. This experience can teach self-discipline and goal-setting skills that can be applied to other areas of life.
10.    Career Opportunities: For some students, PE courses can lead to career opportunities in fields such as physical education, sports coaching, or personal training. These courses can provide the foundational knowledge and skills needed for these professions.
