Total of 100 hours. There are 25 contact hours, including 15 hours of lectures and 10 hours of small group computer lab sessions. The remaining 75 hours are made up of independent study time involving 40 hours background reading, 35 hours coursework preparation.

Educational Aims

a.  To provide an understanding of the key issues to consider when examining causality among economic and finance variables.b.  To enable participants to apply appropriate identification strategies to their own research.c.  To enable participants to check the validity of the assumptions of a variety of econometric techniques.d.  To enable participants to apply the techniques learned using econometric packages.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:

Empirical analysis of economic and financial data with a particular focus on identifying causality. The module also familiarises students with the tools and techniques for transforming (big) data to inform business analysis and decision. 

Intellectual Skills: This module develops:

Being able to solve complex problems and make decisions: establish criteria, using appropriate decision-making techniques including identifying, formulating and solving business problems; and the ability to create, identify and evaluate options; the ability to implement and review decisions
Using information and knowledge effectively in order to abstract meaning from information and to share knowledge, including the use of quantitative skills

Professional Practical Skills: This module develops:

The ability to conduct research and enquiry into business and management issues either individually or as part of a team through research design, the collection and analysis of quantitative data, synthesis and reporting

Transferable (key) Skills: This module develops:

Effective communication: networking, listening, oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports
