Summary
The module aims to develop student employability and assess global human resource management practices. It develops practical skills relating to real-world diversity initiatives. Students will develop a detailed career plan and appreciate key aspects of delivering effective HRM within local and global contexts. The module will build confidence, employability and skills, and critical awareness needed to be an effective HR practitioner in a variety of organisational settings.
Target Students
Only available for students registered on taught postgraduate programmes in FASS.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
44 hours over 11 weeks, 11 x 4 hours lectures (2 hours x 2 per week) and group teaching, comprising case studies, exercises and group presentations.
Assessment
- 30% Group Presentation: Group Presentation (20 minutes with Q&A)
- 70% Individual Coursework: Individual Coursework (4000 words)

Educational Aims
To enable students to:Examine personal values, interests, and skills and to consider their relevance in future career choices.Formulate an individual job search action plan, incorporating career goals supported by employment market research and analysis.Evaluate personal development and growth needs.Analyse the processes underpinning career options and job search, with focus on processes involved in successfully applyjng for postgraduate employment in a global context.Explain external environmental forces and how they shape and impact organisational and HR strategies and practices.Critically analyse HRM rhetoric, implications, and opportunities in an international context.Evaluate sustainable performance oriented HRM practices as a new standard critical to the achievement of sustainable business strategies in a globalised world.Critically evaluate both theory and practice relating to workplace diversity.Analyse real-world diversity initiatives in relation to their content, processes, outcomes and theoretical foundation.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- People - strategic and operational HRM, meeting future organisaional requirements, people development, HR systems
- Strategic risk management and issues of compliance
- The dynamics of the global economy and international business &/or an awareness of cultural, legal/regulatory, political, and economic differences across countries &/or an appreciation of management issues from a global perspective.
- Markets - the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services
- The management of resources
- The management of operations
- Leadership and management of people within organisations – leadership, organisational behaviour and motivation
- Strategic management - the development and implementation of appropriate strategies within a changing environment
- Intellectual Skills: This module develops:
Being able to think critically and be creative: manage the creative processes in self and others; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately - Using information and knowledge effectively in order to abstract meaning from information and to share knowledge, including the use of quantitative skills
Professional Practical Skills: This module develops:
- the ability to recognise the need for and initiate change and to be able to manage change
- The ability to recognise and address ethical dilemmas, corporate social responsibility issues applying ethical and organisational values to situations and choices
- The ability to conduct research and enquiry into business and management issues either individually or as part of a team through research design, the collection and analysis of qualitative data, synthesis and reporting
- Effective performance within team environments and the ability to recognise and utilise individuals' contributions in group processes and to negotiate and persuade or influence others; team selection, delegation, development and management. Leadership and performance management: selecting appropriate leadership style for different situations; setting objectives, motivating, monitoring performance, coaching and mentoring
Transferable (key) Skills: This module develops:
- Effective communication: networking, listening, oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports
- High personal effectiveness: critical self-awareness, self-reflection and self-management; time management; conflict resolution, displaying commercial acumen, the ability to continue to learn through reflection on practice and experience
- Soft skills: understanding the needs of others and empathy towards them; sensitivity to diversity in people and in different situations
