Summary
This module concentrates on the major investment and financing decisions made by managers within a firm.
Target Students
Available to all Part I and Part II NUBS students with the required pre-requisiteBUSI1045 Business Finance. Not available to students taking or have taken BUSI3159 Finance in the Global Market module.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 5 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (3-hour): One 3-hour examination

Educational Aims
The idea that managers should operate in the interests of shareholders is examined and its consequences explored. The course looks at what should happen in practice, but also what does happen. Where theory and practice apparently diverge possible reasons are explored.Learning Outcomes

This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
- The dynamic and changing nature of business and the consideration of the future of organisations within the global business environment, including the management of risk.
- The sources, uses and management of finance.
- The use of accounting and other information systems for managing financial risk.
- The development of appropriate policies and strategies within a changing environment to meet stakeholder interests.
- The use of risk management techniques and business continuity planning to help maximise achievement of strategic objectives.
Intellectual skills
This module develops:
- The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions.
- Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

This module develops:
- Numeracy and quantitative skills to manipulate data, evaluate, estimate and model business problems, functions and phenomena.
