Introduction to income tax; employment income; national insurance contributions; corporation tax; trading profits and basis of assessment; capital allowances; capital gains tax (individuals); value added tax

- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks

- 100% Exam (2-hour): Exam (ICAEW accredited)

Educational Aims
The aim of the module is to enable students to understand the general objectives of taxation and to calculate income tax, national insurance contributions, capital gains tax, corporation tax and VAT in straightforward scenariosLearning Outcomes

This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
• The main current technical language and practices of accounting in a specified socio-economic domain

This module develops:
• The ability to analyse facts and circumstances to determine the cause of a problem and identifying and selecting appropriate solutions
• The ability to analyse and evaluate a range of business data, sources of information and appropriate methodologies, which includes the need for strong digital literacy, and to use that research for evidence-based decision-making
• The ability to analyse and draw reasoned conclusions concerning structured and, to a more limited extent, unstructured problems from a given set of data and from data which must be acquired by the student.
