Summary

This is a core module taught to MSc in Microbial Biotechnology specialism and is designed to introduce the MSc students to basic techniques for use in research project.

In addition, current trends in microbial biotechnology with microbes as examples will be examined from the current literature. As a research preparation module, it is intended to supplement and prepare students for BIOS4096 by gaining information on relevant techniques both in the lab and in data interpretation.

Target Students

MSc in Microbial Biotechnology.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

The aim of the module is to familiarise students with the topics of microbial biotechnology and the latest developments in this field. To accomplish this, students will be expected to read publications and prepare critical analysis in microbial biotechnology, which will be formally presented in the tutorials. To develop presentation skills, students will also be expected to lead discussions on these topics. Other sessions include the review of laboratory techniques, which will underpin the completion of the research project module BIOS4096.The examination will test the students on their ability to read and discuss research papers, and to demonstrate they have gained knowledge of topics covered in tutorial sessions during the semester.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the current state of art in microbial biotechnology.

Understand basic laboratory techniques crucial for the completion of the research project module.
