Summary
This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts in the field of Nutrition, including requirements for macronutrients (e.g. proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and micronutrients (e.g. vitamins and minerals).
Target Students
Students studying on the PGDip/MSc Animal Nutrition programmes.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 80% Exam 1 (2-hour): ExamSys
- 20% In class ExamSys (1-hour): Vitamins and minerals ExamSys test
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
1) To provide a comprehensive introduction to nutritional science, including ethical issues.2) To emphasise the scientific, evidence based approach to nutrition.3) To illustrate the quantitative nature of nutritional science.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of essential and non-essential nutrients in the diet, including both macro-and micro-nutrients.
- Explain the factors that regulate energy intake and expenditure.
- Apply numerical skills to nutritional problems.
