Summary
This module considers:
- Research processes in animal nutrition
- Government and industry funded research
- Knowledge transfer and communication of nutritional research
- Techniques in animal and laboratory research
- Experimental design, data analysis and interpretation and other topics as deemed appropriate to the module content.
Target Students
Students registered for MSc/PGDip in Animal Nutrition.
Classes
Blended learning approach including formal lectures, statistical exercises and tutorials, directed private study, presentation and coursework.
Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: Journal Club - 15 minute Powerpoint Presentation
- 50% Coursework 2: BBSRC style mini-grant application (2,000 word report)
- 25% Coursework 3: Moodle Open book statistics test
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To develop an in-depth understanding of the research process including formulating hypotheses, experimental design, laboratory and animal research techniques, ethical and animal welfare considerations, the nature of basic and applied research, data analysis and interpretation, research communication skills (oral and written), research funding, and how to write research project and grant proposals.Knowledge gained will be demonstrated primarily by assignments requiring students to interpret and present research findings (Journal Club), design and plan specific research projects and write a mini grant application (based on a topic selected by the student for their Research Project. This will require the student to assemble the many separate elements of this module). An open book statistical test involving the use of calculators will assess comprehension of experimental design and analyses.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Identify research techniques associated with nutrition research including methods used in the laboratory and procedures with animals.
- Critically evaluate research findings from a variety of peer reviewed papers and technical literature.
- Communicate ideas and research findings by oral presentation.
- Apply appropriate statistical analyses to nutritional studies with animals.
- Identify ethical and welfare considerations associated with nutritional studies in animals.
- Design a mini-grant application.
