Summary
To enable participants to further their knowledge and understanding of the current trends and evidence base underpinning the nutritional management of people with gastrointestinal diseases in order for them to achieve the competencies required to support more specialist skills.
Target Students
Note this module is designed for the practitioner who is working at band 5/6 level and has a limited experience of working with this patient group.
Classes
Runs over 8 weeks 4 x 8 hour sessions, 4 full days of delivery plus 3 x 3 hour workshops 1 x 3 hour practical 1 x 3hour session for formative presentations (usually over October-December). Plus 12 hours pre-course reading and 156 hours self-directed study.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Short report (1500 words)
- 70% Coursework 2: 4,500 words case study or service development outline

Educational Aims
To enable participants to further their knowledge and understanding of the current trends and evidence base underpinning the nutritional management of people with gastrointestinal diseases in order for them to achieve the competencies required to support more specialist skills.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to demonstrate the following learning:
1. Describe the normal functions of the GI tract and where/ how nutrients are absorbed/synthesised.
2. Defend the use of different nutritional approaches appropriate to the needs of different sub-groups of people with gastrointestinal diseases – to include coeliac disease and other malabsorptive states, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel resection, GI cancers, liver disease and pancreatitis.
3. Interpret the evidence for the effectiveness of nutrition and dietetic interventions in a range of clinical and community settings, when working with adults with gastrointestinal disease.
4. Design care pathways and treatment plans suitable for service users, (adults with gastrointestinal disease), with a wide range of disease conditions.
5. Describe current policy drivers supporting a high level of nutritional management in the care of people with gastroenterological conditions.
6. Critically assess the importance of working as part of a MDT.
