Summary
Project management skills are highly transferable and directly relevant to employment sectors. The module covers the fundamentals of project management, including project lifecycles, leadership in project management, managing risk in projects, analysing project successes and failures and project management software. Students will produce a documented project management outline tailored to their research project to identify the key constraints, bottlenecks and milestones. This will be supplemented by the production of an appropriate project management visualisation diagram, i.e. a Gantt or PERT chart. They will also present an interim oral report to their supervisors and the module convenor to practise such reporting skills.
Target Students
MSci Environmental Science students and other MSci students within the School of Biosciences.
Assessment
- 55% Presentation 1: Verbal Presentation - 15 min Spring Semester
- 45% Report: 1000 words (Autumn Semester)
Assessed in both autumn & spring semest
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Produce a project plan for a simple project that includes SMART objectives, deliverables and milestones.
2. Produce a Gantt chart detailing a project plan.
3. Produce a stakeholder RACI matrix for a project.
4. Produce a risk log for a project.
5. Critique or defend the use of project management techniques in scientific research.
