Educational Aims

This module will cover an overview of how living cells are used to produce medical, pharmaceutical and diagnostic products that help treat and prevent human and animal diseases. The generation of various diseases will be captured at molecular and cellular levels. Students will explore biotechnological techniques, approaches and inventions leading to future generations of biopharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics. The aims of this module are to:- Provide students with the understanding on how the genetic mutations lead to genetic disorders, diagnosis of genetic disorders and therapeutics.- Introduce to the students the molecular and cellular basis of cancer development and diagnosis.- Provide students with the understanding on how the aberrancy in epigenetics leads to human diseases and the molecular techniques to investigate the epigenetic phenomena.- Provide students with the understanding on stem cells, vaccines and antibodies production as well as gene therapy and their potential applications in medical and health sectors.- To enhance students’ understanding on animal experimentation, clinical trials and biotechnological regulations by showcasing current updates.- To train the students on critical review of journal article and write an editorial comment.
