Summary
This module provides students with specific training and learning to gain a structured understanding of their own personal qualities, the diversity of careers available to them and how to manage and develop their career starting with gaining their first graduate role. These include the following: Behaviours, self-assessment, job application and interview techniques, key employability skills e.g working as part of a team, developing leadership capability, career planning, networking.
Target Students
Food Science and Nutrition and Food Science students.
Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Visit four food/drink manufacturing sites at end of year 1 as part of 2-day, residential field trip; Participate in a range of workshops to develop skills –5x 3h.; Attend employer presentations – 4 x 1 h.; Career Launch Pad Day (or equivalent); 1:1 Support Appointment - 1x 0.5hr; Lectures – 4 x 1 h.; Create online personal portfolio showcasing academic/employability attributes.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Careers Portfolio submitted on Mahara with 2 main components1. A reflective account and personal development plan (maximum 4 pages) - 80% of mark2. A careers portfolio of 4 items obtained or developed during sessions in the semester – 20% of mark (absence of an item will incur penalty of 5% on final module mark, for example if the CV is missing the 20% score is reduced to 15%):Mapped review how you meet the requirements of a CFGC role or Job Specification;CV Demonstrably Specific to a CFGC Role Type or identified Job Specification;research on an employer or job sector or cover letter;attendance at a non-timetabled career event and compulsory attendance at IFST Careers Launchpad (timetabled field trip activity Pass/Fail)
