Summary
This module will further develop students' understanding of the specialised knowledge encompassing the subject of Animal Nutrition. The module objectives are to explain and illustrate Animal Nutrition at an advanced level by developing specific topics including Micronutrient and trace minerals, Organic micronutrients (vitamins B, choline, essential fatty acids), Regulation of growth and product quality, Specialist aspects of ruminant nutrition, diet formulation and selected examples of metabolic disorders.
Target Students
Students studying BSc/MSci Animal Science, BSc Agriculture, BSc Agriculture and Livestock Science.
Classes
- One 4-hour seminar each week for 4 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 18 weeks
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: A seminar on an area of current interest in animal nutrition. The assignment will consist of writing an abstract and presenting a seminar on a subject area related to animal nutrition.
- 60% Exam 1 (2-hour): Exam

Educational Aims

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the nutritional requirements for animal health and growth in both ruminant and non-ruminant species.
- Evaluate the factors involved in the regulation of growth and product quality
- Critically evaluate information from a range of sources on a specialist topic of current research in animal nutrition
- Evaluate specialist topics using appropriate academic formats
