Summary
The module will introduce students to key principles in plant biology and how we study them. We will use examples from model organisms, important crop species and from the natural world.
Target Students
Available to students in Biosciences and Natural Sciences.
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): ExamSys Exam
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To provide an introduction to the biology and importance of plants.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe the process of plant evolution and place the Angiosperms in the context of different types of plants
Discuss the cellular structure of plants, in particular seeds, leaves, flowers and roots and demonstrate an understanding of how these multicellular tissues are constructed
Appreciate the importance of model plants such as Arabidopsis in the development of modern plant biology and demonstrate a knowledge of how this plant's attributes have been exploited
Recognise the importance of plant nutrition and the interaction with pathogens are crucial to plant growth and production
Develop professional skills in scientific information retrieval and work safely in a laboratory situation.
