Summary

This module involves in-depth independent study of a subject in American and Canadian Studies. As such, it fosters both student-centred and student-initiated learning. The topic chosen by the candidate must be appropriate for their Honours course and must be approved by the module convenor. Each student is assigned a supervisor. The completed dissertation should be 10,000-12,000 words in length (including footnotes or endnotes but excluding the bibliography).

Target Students

Only available to Final Year SH and JH American and Canadian Studies students. This module cannot be taken if the student is studying AMCS3004.

Educational Aims

To foster students' ability to undertake sustained academic study of a topic of their own choosing in which they will apply a range of disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary skills. Students will exercise initiative and personal responsibility by identifying and defining a research topic, selecting appropriate methodologies, gathering and accurately recording pertinent information, and reporting their findings and conclusions in a single, sustained and integrated piece of work.
