Summary
This module involves in-depth independent study of a subject in American and Canadian Studies. As such, it fosters both student-centred and student-initiated learning. The topic chosen by the candidate must be appropriate for their Honours course and must be approved by the module convenor. Each student is assigned a supervisor. The completed dissertation should be 5,000-7000 words in length (including footnotes or endnotes but excluding the bibliography).
Target Students
Only available to Final Year SH and JH American and Canadian Studies students. This module cannot be taken if the student is studying AMCS3006.

- One 1-hour workshop per week for 6 weeks

- 100% Dissertation: 1 x 5,000 - 7,000 word dissertation

Educational Aims
To foster students' ability to undertake sustained academic study of a topic of their own choosing in which they will apply a range of disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary skills. Students will exercise initiative and personal responsibility by identifying and defining a research topic, selecting appropriate methodologies, gathering and accurately recording pertinent information, and reporting their findings and conclusions in a single, sustained and integrated piece of work.Learning Outcomes
Researching and writing the dissertation fosters the following intellectual, professional and key skills:
- the ability to work independently;
- the ability to gather and collate complex research materials appropriate to the set task;
- critical thinking and analytical skills;
- the ability to write fluently and succinctly and to present the dissertation in appropriate academic form;
- the capacity to organize one’s personal schedule and manage time efficiently to complete work on time.
