Summary
This module contains the taught components of the Professional Studies Part 3 course structured around the Professional Criteria set out by the ARB (Architect’s Registration Board) in their Prescription of qualifications: ARB Criteria at Part 3, and the IfATE Architect (Integrated Degree) standard. The module forms part of the overall professional studies programme which is validated by the Architect’s Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to meet and provide exemption from the entry requirements to the UK Register of Architects.

Classes
- One 6-hour workshop
- One 3-hour workshop
- One 30-minute tutorial each week for 3 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar
- Two 1-hour lectures each week for 12 weeks
The teaching and learning in this module will involve attendance at two in-person recall sessions and on line lecture / workshop sessions. Activities will generally take place in blocks of 4-5 weeks, followed by a gap of 4-6 weeks to allow progression of assignments with self-led learning, study group sessions and practice-based experience.

Educational Aims
Content covers professional practice from the macro to the micro level; the way political/social/economic changes affect the profession and practice, down to detail such as the use of contract administration forms and day-today job-running in the office. [PC1] Professionalism – demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the nature of professionalism with respect to ethics, integrity, impartiality, and reliability within the framework of institutional membership, codes of conduct and regulation. [K12]
The skills necessary to undertake effective communication (visual, oral and written) and presentation, organisation, self-management and autonomous working across RIBA Work Stages. (S1, S6, S13)
[PC2] Clients and services – demonstrate understanding of the range of services offered by architects and delivering those services in a manner prioritising the interests of the client and other stakeholders. This will be supported by knowledge of the briefing process, forms and terms of appointment, the means of professional remuneration, relevant legislation, and the execution of appropriate programmed and coordinated project tasks. [PC3] Legal framework and process - demonstrate understanding of the legal context within which an Architect must operate, and the processes undertaken to ensure compliance with legal requirements or standards (i.e. planning, Building Regulations, CDM, heritage legislation, accessibility, etc.) [K4, K6, K11, K14]
The skills necessary to positively interact with statutory and private bodies or individuals, and competently deliver projects within diverse legislative frameworks and a range of sectors. (S4, S11, S14)
[PC4] Practice and management – demonstrate understanding of the business priorities, required management processes and risks of running an architectural practice, and the relationship between the practice of architecture and the UK construction industry. [K15]
The skills necessary to engage in business administration and ability to resource, plan, implement and record project tasks to achieve stated goals, either individually or within a team. (S6, S15)
[PC5] Building procurement – demonstrate understanding of UK construction and contract law, construction procurement processes and the roles of built environment professionals. This will be supported by an understanding of the role of the Architect, contractual relationships, the obligations upon an architect acting as contract administrator, job-related administrative systems and the management of projects in the context of the student’s professional experience, including awareness of controlling building costs and the role of advanced processes and modern construction methods.
