Summary
This module supports the development of architectural thinking to an advanced level through a critical examination of architectural culture. It supports Architectural Research Study by contextualising the chosen area of research in the broader theoretical and culture context of architecture.
Target Students
Students studying MArch Architecture with Collaborative Practice (ARB/RIBA Part 2) U7UARCCPX and U7UARCCPY.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture
Activities may take place in every teaching week of the semester or only in specified weeks.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Comprehensive essay.
Educational Aims
Overall the module aims to:* Support the development of architectural skills to an advanced level and their application in the design studio* Develop specialist design knowledge and understanding* Introduce practical research methods; enable students to prepare for their thesis project's research and offer theoretical study background to their associated Architectural Research Study where applicable.Learning Outcomes
In general, this module supports a student to:
1. Articulate an appropriate architectural approach which reveals an understanding of architectural histories and theories in a cultural context, and the influence of the fine arts on architectural design
2. Critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in architecture, to demonstrate understanding of social science research methodologies (through application) and architectural theories and where appropriate to develop critiques of them and propose new and original hypothesis
3. Independently define and critically appraise their ideas in relation to a design and the work of others
4. Produce documentation and reports which are clear, analytical and logical covering a range of architectural issues of culture, history, theory and design
5. Identify and manage individual learning needs so as to prepare for and maintain professional standards commensurate with qualification
6. Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acting autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level
7. Exercise initiative and personal responsibility and continue to advance their knowledge and understanding of architecture through independent and research-led attitude to learning.
This module supports the following L7 Architect Apprenticeship KSB's (knowledge Skills and Behaviors, through assessment (A) - supporting a student to:
Knowledge
K2 History and Theory - History of architecture and its impact on architectural practice. The cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence the design of buildings.
K3 Fine Arts - How the theories, practices and technologies of the arts influence architectural design and their creative application in design projects.
K5 People and Environment - The in-depth relationships between users and buildings, between buildings and their environment, and the need to relate buildings and the spaces between them to diverse user needs and scale.
Skills
S2 History and Theory - Apply understanding of current architectural debate to produce innovative solutions. Produce clear, logically argued and original written work relating to architectural culture, theory and design.
Behaviors
B4 Be organised and practice self-management when working independently.
