Summary

This seminar module aims to support the development of architectural research methods. It introduces conceptual ideas, research paradigms, methods and approaches from different disciplines related to architecture in order to support students ability to develop original research within the form of a critical written study on an architectural subject chosen by the student. It is undertaken with expert advice from the staff.

Target Students

Students registered on the Master in Architecture Course who have taken Semester 1 in practice, or on overseas exchange.

Classes

The teaching and learning in this module will involve attendance at tutorials,(individual and group), as well as engagement with the Talking Architecture lecture series offered on a weekly basis.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The module gives students an opportunity to develop original research within a specialist area. It aims to develop students’ capacities for reasoning and critical analysis about the spatial, aesthetic, technical and social qualities of architecture within the scope and scale of a wider environment. It gives guidance on how to develop a reasoned argument that contributes to the discourse of architecture in its cultural context.

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes for each design studio will be particular and more detail will be provided as part of the design project brief.

In general students will be expected to:

• develop original research within the form of a critical written study on an architectural subject;
• articulate an appropriate architectural approach which reveals an understanding of relevant design theory in a cultural context;
• critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in architecture, to evaluate methodologies and architectural theories and where appropriate to develop critiques of them and propose new and original hypotheses;
• independently define and critically appraise their ideas in relation to a design and the work of others;
• express their critical position in a written form within the academic standards;
• identify and manage individual learning needs so as to prepare for and maintain professional standards commensurate with qualification;
• demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level;
• exercise initiative and personal responsibility and continue to advance their knowledge and understanding of architecture through an independent and research-led attitude to learning.
