Summary
This module supports the development of architectural thinking to an advanced level through a critical examination of architectural culture. Module content is augmented by seminars covering research methods. This module is also intended to relate to studio modules by supporting research methods and the practical application of knowledge within the design studio.
Target Students
Student studying MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) U7PATTAR and U7PATTAR3.
Classes
- One 2-hour tutorial each week for 4 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 5 weeks
This module involves attendance at lectures, tutorials and seminars. By the middle of Semester 1 students will submit an essay proposal and literature review for allocation of tutors. In the second part of Semester 1 students will attend tutorials and conduct individual supported study towards completion of the coursework. ABEE4033 has approximately 30 hours of tutor-led activities and students should expect to undertake approximately 170 hours of further study
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: comprehensive illustrated report.
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to equip the student with a theoretical understanding of architecture as a culture. It situates their design studio work in the context of the architectural profession and its culture, which is discussed in the context of current debates from architectural history, theory and criticism.Learning Outcomes
In general, this module supports a student to:
1. Articulate an appropriate architectural approach which reveals an understanding of architectural histories and theories in a cultural context, and the influence of the fine arts on architectural design
2. Critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in architecture, to demonstrate understanding of social science research methodologies (through application) and architectural theories and where appropriate to develop critiques of them and propose new and original hypothesis
3. Independently define and critically appraise their ideas in relation to a design and the work of others
4. Produce documentation and reports which are clear, analytical and logical covering a range of architectural issues of culture, history, theory and design
5. Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acting autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level
6. Exercise initiative and personal responsibility and continue to advance their knowledge and understanding of architecture through independent and research-led attitude to learning.
This module supports the following ARB Criteria at Part 2, through assessment (A) - supporting a student to:
GC1.3 Have the ability to develop a conceptual and critical approach to architectural design that integrates and satisfies the aesthetic aspects of a building and the technical requirements of its construction and the needs of the user.
GC2.1 Have the knowledge of the cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence the design of buildings.
GC2.2 Have the knowledge of the influence of history and theory on the spatial, social and technological aspects of architecture.
GC3.1 Have the knowledge of how the theories, practices and technologies of the arts influence architectural design
GA2.4 Have the ability to critically understanding how knowledge is advanced through research to produce clear, logically argued and original written work relating to architectural culture, theory and design.
GA2.5 Understand the context of the architect and the construction industry, including the architect's role in the processes of procurement and building production, and under legislation.
