Summary

This module introduces Urban Design Management (UDM). It examines the stakeholders involved in urban projects to explore new approaches in urban design and planning practice, putting emphasis on the co-operative aspects and the various perspectives requiring integration and coordination. The complex role of architects and urban designers is examined in relation to design, planning and project management with particular emphasis on collaboration, negotiation and coordination skills. The module is rooted in regional and international examples, making it accessible for all students studying architecture and urban design at a postgraduate level.

Educational Aims

The specific education aims include:1. The structure of a project team and the various stakeholders involved2. Objectives and benefits of various management and project approaches, including urban design competitions3. The need to take local characteristics, such as existing urban policies and markets, into account in design and planning4. The preparation required for a co-operative planning process and how initial information can be collected and used5. How to define project content, and outlining the project itself.

Learning Outcomes

The main learning outcomes include:

1. An overall understanding of urban design management and the various project types.

2. The various stakeholders involved in the management of a master planning project and their roles and interests.

3. The particular approach in initiating and directing urban design competitions via communicating the opportunities of specific sites and by setting development parameters.

4. The understanding of existing development policies and building regulations to identify potential revisions.

5. The role of participatory urban design approaches and their communication and management.
