Summary
Case Study Project is a module focused on learning from existing buildings and/or urban spaces through post-occupancy and performance monitoring and evaluation. The aim of the module is to examine sustainable and environmental design issues through theoretical studies and/or fieldwork. This may include qualitative observations, on-site monitoring, physical and virtual modelling and simulation, and/or occupant questionnaires on a chosen case study. Through hands-on environmental and sustainable design testing and evaluation, students will obtain a good understanding of the inter-related parameters that affect the resulting design quality. This module is assessed through two reviews in class and a written report in the format of a research article summarising the work findings and proposing solutions based on qualitative and quantitative investigation and analysis.
If a student is required to resit this module then the reassessment will be in the form of a written report (even if the aspect that has been failed is one or both of the in-class activities).
Target Students
MArch Architecture and Sustainable Design K11L, MArch Architecture Design K11K, MArch Architecture Design + Build K11M; U7PAASSD, U7PADESN, U7PSSTUB, U7PARDAB.
Assessment
- 80% Coursework: A4 essay article (word count or page limit as per assessment brief).
- 10% Assessment 1: Review held in classroom, time limit as per the assessment brief.
- 10% Assessment 2: Review held in classroom, time limit as per the assessment brief.
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
Case Study Project aims to enable the learning and understanding of environmental design issues through post-occupancy and performance monitoring and evaluation of selected case studies. Students will develop an understanding of the inter-related but often conflicting environmental design issues through qualitative observation, on-site monitoring, physical and virtual modelling and simulation, and/or occupant questionnaires. The module offers opportunities for students to explore sustainable and environmental design issues in depth, to further develop their preferred speciality, and to develop academic writing skills.Learning Outcomes
A) Knowledge and understanding
A1) of the key environmental and sustainable design principles and their practical applications
A2) of the opportunities and benefits which arise from exploring sustainable design principles in architecture and urban design
A3) of the key research and building/space performance prediction and evaluation methods
A4) of the human factors affecting the perception and performance of the built environment
B) Intellectual skills
B1) enable informed judgments about the appropriate environmental and sustainable strategies to deliver high performing spaces
B2) demonstrate an understanding of environmental and sustainable design principles and practice in relation to specific design problems
B3) demonstrate the ability to conduct meaningful building performance analysis, critically interrogate simulation results and draw insightful conclusions
C) Professional practical skills
C1) identify and pursue interesting and relevant research questions
C2) evaluate and select appropriate tools and techniques to assess the performance of spaces and their design
