Summary

In order to condition the air within buildings via heating and cooling applications it is necessary to use equipment such as heat exchangers and refrigeration technologies.  This module develops understanding of heat transfer and refrigeration, relating the underpinning principles and theories to the equipment used in buildings to maintain comfort conditions in buildings. The content is divided into three parts:
1.    Principles and technology of heat transfer,
2.    Principles and technology of refrigeration systems,
3.    Air conditioning systems and distribution.
Heat transfer covers topics such as; forced internal convection heat transfer, heat transfer measurement, convection heat transfer with phase change, heat exchanger design and heat transfer enhancement, and the selection of heat exchangers for building application.   Refrigeration technology covers areas such as; vapour compression, vapour absorption and other heat powered refrigeration systems. Areas of exploration could include; principles of refrigeration, the factors that affect refrigeration system efficiency, the methods to improve refrigeration system performance and the selection of refrigeration & cooling systems for building application. Air and building conditioning systems are used to explore different approaches to employing heating, cooling and heat exchange within services systems commonly employed in buildings.

A student who fails the exam will be reassessed in the form of an exam.  A student who fails the laboratory assignment will be reassessed via a laboratory assignment.

Target Students

BEng/ MEng Architectural Environment Engineering students; U6UAAEENG (Year 3); U6UAEENGY (Year 4); U7UAEENG (Year 3); U7UAEENGY (Year 3); U7UAEENGY1 (Year 4); (K240, K24B, K241, K24A, K24D).

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

This module provides knowledge of heat transfer and refrigeration technology to inform the analysis and design of heating and cooling systems for building and industrial applications.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding: Heat transfer and cooling theory and the way in which this informs system design.

Intellectual skills: Ability to apply the principles of heat transfer, refrigeration & cooling to interpreting the operation of air and building conditioning systems.

Professional/practical skills: Ability to complete simple design exercises matching demand for heating and cooling to the components that deliver these services.

Transferable/key skills: Awareness of health and safety within laboratory environments Interpretation of data collected from experimental work

This module supports the following Engineering Council learning outcomes - supporting students to:
M1 Apply a comprehensive knowledge of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles to the solution of complex problems. Much of the knowledge will be at the forefront of the particular subject of study and informed by a critical awareness of new developments and the wider context of engineering
M2 Formulate and analyse complex problems to reach substantiated conclusions. This will involve evaluating available data using first principles of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles, and using engineering judgment to work with information that may be uncertain or incomplete, discussing the limitations of the techniques employed
M3 Select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model complex problems, discussing the limitations of the techniques employed
M12 Use practical laboratory and workshop skills to investigate complex problems.
