Summary
This module is concerned with the design and operation of tall buildings. In particular, it examines the sustainable design of tall buildings and their relationship with the physical, environmental and cultural characteristics of place. Examples of topics covered include:
History of the tall building typology;
Tall building design considerations (planning, organisation, circulation, functions, plan form, core design, vertical transportation, social spaces and the public realm, etc);
Technical aspects of tall building design (structure, construction, materials, safety and security, servicing, etc.);
Tall buildings and place (impact of climate, culture and context on design);
The sustainable case for and against tall buildings;
Environmental design strategies in tall buildings (natural ventilation,,facade design, etc);
Social sustainability, lifestyle and place making in tall buildings.

Classes
- One 2-hour workshop
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Breakdown of hours: Tutor led - 24 hours; student directed – 76 hours further study and essay preparation
Assessment
- 95% Coursework 1: Ilustrated research essay.
- 5% Coursework 2: Class exercise.

Educational Aims
To introduce and develop an understanding of the issues concerned with the design, construction and operation of tall buildings. To develop research on sustainable tall buildings and to communicate these in written form.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to further develop:
Knowledge and Understanding of the factors affecting the sustainable design, construction and operation of tall buildings the broader topics related to tall buildings, such as the history of the typology, connections between urban density, transport and architecture; the applicability of environmental strategies in the tall architectural design process

The real world application of concepts covered within the modules
Transferable Skills
Demonstrate an ability to research, interpret, manage, and communicate information through an essay in a clear and engaging way
