Summary
This module introduces the student to the social, ethical, business and industrial context of professional practice. The nature of the profession and the construction industry is introduced. The RIBA work stages are defined with a focus on key tasks undertaken by the architect in practice. The important regulatory requirements and processes, procurement routes, the principles and priorities of running a traditional contract on site together with standard documents used in this process are taught. Key management disciplines and techniques and their context are also discussed.
The module also prepares students for their placement year by introducing the year out requirements, how to go about getting the right job and the skills involved in achieving this.
If a student fails this module a separate written assignment will be set requiring between 1500 - 2000 words.

Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Individual report
- 30% Coursework 2: Group Activity
- 20% Exam 1 (1-hour)

Educational Aims
This module aims to achieve the following General Attributes of the ARB/RIBA Criteria.On completion of this module students will haveknowledge of the context of the architect and the construction industry, and the professional qualities needed for decision making in complex and unpredictable circumstances (GA.5)the ability to identify individual learning needs and understand the personal responsibility required for further professional education. (GA.6)They will also have fulfilled in part the Architects' Registration Board (qualifications: ARB Criteria at Parts 1, 2 and 3, specifically the General Criteria (GC) at Part 1.Learning Outcomes
Students on completing this module will have:
Knowledge and understanding of how the current planning system and development control legislation works at strategic and practical levels, including social, environmental and economic aspects, and the relevance of these to design development. (GC4.3)
An understanding of the idea of professionalism and its importance and relevance in today’s society including the architect’s duty and responsibility to clients, building users, constructors, co-professionals and the wider society. (GC6.1)
An understanding of the role of the architect as part of the building team, recognising changing methods and improvements in the construction industry. (GC6.2)
Knowledge and an understanding of the component costs of different building costs, constructional systems, and specification choices, and the impact of these on architectural design. (GC10.1)
An understanding of the standard procedures for managing costs on a traditionally procured building. (GC10.2)
Knowledge of the Planning, Building Control and CDM legislative frameworks both in principle and practice. (GC11.1) (GC4.3)
Knowledge of the different roles of clients, consultants and contractors under different building procurement methods. (GC11.2)
Knowledge of how architects organise and manage their business practices including good management techniques. This will include placing this knowledge in the context of changes that have affected the management of building contracts in recent years. (GC11.3)
An ability to format and structure clearly a professional document that is accurate and succinct in the way it is presented (GC7.3)
An ability to assess information and make valued judgements accordingly (GC7.3)
An understanding of Building Regulations Part B and an ability to undertake a professional assessment and present compliant design solutions to conform to the regulations. (GC10.3)
An understanding of the CDM regulations and ability to apply these in a project specific risk assessment process and present results in a professional manner. (GC10.3)
