Summary

Building on fundamental core design skills developed in Design Studio 1A and 1B, this module focuses on further developing students' practical architectural design skills and exploring the relevance and application of related subjects such as the arts, humanities, environmental design, structure and construction, to their design. The emphasis is given to the craft of architecture, improving spatial, aesthetic, sensory as well as practical, structural and dimensional qualities of the design.

The studio is set up in a vertical structure of between 10 -12 units teaching approx. 30 students each, made up of year 2, 3 and 4 students.

The units are organised into 5 thematic Streams, addressing the diversity of architectural approaches according to the ARB/RIBA criteria as follows;

1.0  Urban Initiations
2.0 Design + Make
3.0 Cultural Contexts
4.0  Poetic Narratives
5.0 Communities

The module is structured through two distinct projects.

Project (P1), ‘Situation’, addresses site and context and is intended as a short and flexible project, introducing the students to the unit themes, approach/ethos and working processes alongside the unit’s chosen location for study. Project 1 is usually undertaken in groups fostering a collaborative unit led approach to the research and understanding of context and working methods of the unit. All students will in the same area/location chosen by the unit.

Project 2 (P2) is a key design project and is undertaken individually.  It is taught by all units ensuring,  the continuation of learning and the coverage of essential learning outcomes. Students are required to develop themes introduced in Project 1 and are expected to apply that research gathered relevant to the project. Students are required to consider the making of place for community, the subject of which is based on each unit's theme. The project will also be situated in the unit's chosen location.

It is anticipated that Design Studio Units will work in the same area/location for the duration of the module and for the follow-on module ABEE2006 Architectural Design Studio 2B to deepen contextual knowledge and understanding of site and context critical to the development and progressing of design projects for both modules.

If a student fails both this module and ABEE2006 at the first attempt, they will be required to pass both modules by resitting them in attendance before progressing to the next stage of the K100 BArch (Hons) Architecture programme.

Educational Aims

This studio-based module aims to develop students' basic skills and approaches to architectural design through design projects 1 and 2 as described above. Students will be expected to understand the fundamentals of place making, organisational discipline and the composition of plan, section and elevation in medium scale project work. Students will begin at a more advanced level to inform design through an understanding of environmental, climatic and tectonic influences. This module aims to practice and achieve the General Attributes of the ARB/RIBA Criteria as follows;Students will have the ability to generate design proposals using understanding of a body of knowledge, some at the current boundaries of professional practice and the academic discipline of architecture. (GA1.1)Students will have the ability to apply a range of communication methods and& media to present design proposals clearly and effectively. (GA1.1.2)Students will have the understanding of alternative materials, processes & techniques that apply to architectural design & building construction. (GA1.3)Students will have the ability to evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions in order to make and present sound judgments within a structured discourse relating to architectural culture, theory and design. (GA1.4)And also, to fulfil in part the Architects' Registration Board (ARB) Prescription of qualifications: ARB Criteria at Parts 1, 2 & 3, specifically the General Criteria (GC) at Part 1 for students participating in BArch K100 and MEng K230.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will demonstrate the following;

1.0 An ability to relate specific spatial requirements and designs to user needs in response to a specific site, environment and context. (GC1.1,GC5.1, GC5.3, GA1.1)

2.0 An ability to design a project achieving aesthetic qualities in spatial arrangements and expressed form alongside  the appropriate use of various media including the use of technical drawing conventions and creative expressive techniques. (GC1.1, GC1.3, GA1.1, GA1.2)

3.0 An ability to design a medium sized project of average complexity including the integration of the technical aspects of construction, structure, environmental performance and materials in the project's design. (GC1.3)

4.0 A degree of critical and conceptual understanding reflected in the project's design in terms of responding to a brief, achieving aesthetic quality, understanding cultural and physical context and fundamental technical and environmental strategies.  (GC1.3, GC5.3, GA1.6)

5.0  An ability to derive ideas, inspiration and techniques from the Arts. (GC3.1, GC3.2, GC3.3)

6.0 An ability to work iteratively and to make critical assessments and valued judgements through a thorough study and comparison of precedents both historical and contemporary. (GC7.1)

7.0 An ability to understand and account for core climate change design criteria when applied to sustainable buildings. (GC9.1, GC9.2)
